Senso-ji at Sunrise

My first hotel was in Asakusa, so I spent some time at the Senso-ji temple during sunrise. I took photos documenting the temple through various phases of sunrise: in darkness, to blue hour, to the golden morning light. The temple starts off as barely populated during the early morning, with more and more people trickling in every hour as it gets brighter. Luckily I was able to beat the crowds.

Asakusa at Night

Since I was staying in Asakusa, it was easy for me to walk around the various areas during the night. Asakusa has many streets and alleyways full of street-food stalls and izakayas, all lit up by bright neon signage and street lamps.

Shibuya

My second hotel in Tokyo was in Shibuya, so I spent a lot of time walking around the various neighborhoods, spending a lot of time in Harajuku in particular. I also took some quick trips to Akihabara, Jimbocho, Ebisu, and Sangenjaya, and feature a few photos from those locations as well.

Shibuya Crossing at Night

Since I was staying so close to Shibuya Crossing, it only made sense to spend time there during the night and take photos of the crowds lining up and rushing to cross as soon as the crosswalk signs turn green.

Shinkansen and Mt Fuji

I was also traveling to Osaka during this trip to Japan, and took the Shinkansen from Tokyo station. Luckily, it was a clear day, so I got some great views of Mt Fuji during my train ride.

In Closing

I always look forward to exploring Tokyo, and have a lot of fun taking photos in this city. It feels like every time I am there I discover a new neighborhood that I had missed before, or discover a new street or alleyway with vibrant colors, or find other interesting pockets of civilization in new places. I love the contrast of how calm the city is during the early mornings, with the human energy increasing steadily throughout the day and well into the late night.

It's one of those cities where I can visit as many times as I want, but still won't be able to explore all of it.
